Hair Relaxer Lawsuit

Hair Relaxer Lawsuit

A 2022 National Institutes of Health study found that women who reported using hair relaxers more than four times in a year are about twice as likely to be prone to uterine cancer than women who do not. The study was conducted over the course of 10 years and included 33,000 women between the ages of 35-74. As a result, a few cosmetic companies that sell products linked to causing cancer have lawsuits filed against them. If you or someone you know has a history of using these hair products, there might be entitlement to compensation.

Illnesses Linked to Toxic Hair Products

Illnesses Linked to Toxic Hair Products

Toxic hair products such as hair relaxers can cause illnesses that are harmful to the human body. Researchers discovered that hair relaxers can cause fibroids and an early onset of puberty in girls which can increase the risk for metabolic syndromes like obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Studies have also found a link between using chemical hair relaxers and increased rates of uterine cancer; according to Boston University’s Black Women Health Study, women who reported using hair relaxers more than twice a year or who used them for more than five years had more than a 50% risk of developing uterine cancer compared to those who never or rarely used hair relaxers.

Why are Hair Relaxers so Harmful

Why are Hair Relaxers so Harmful?

Certain hair relaxers can have the following harmful effects: chemical burns, endocrine disruption, and risk of cancer. Harsh alkaline chemicals in relaxers can cause scalp burns, irritation, and inflammation, especially if they are left on the scalp for too long. Some ingredients in relaxers might interfere with hormone function for women, and even some studies have found a link between long-term users of hair relaxers and increased risk of certain cancers like breast and uterine cancer. If you believe you have sustained an injury due to hair relaxers, Forester Haynie can help build your case.
