The epidemic has led several cities, counties, and states across the United States to file federal lawsuits to hold drug manufacturers such as Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer Inc., and Purdue Pharma Inc. responsible for the economic burden of the opioid addiction, estimated to total $78.5 billion nationally.
