What is AFFF?
Aqueous Film-Forming Foam, or AFFF, is a type of foam used to fight liquid-fueled fires, such as those caused by gasoline, oil, and jet fuel. It works by spreading over the surface of a burning liquid, cutting off the fire’s oxygen supply, and cooling the liquid fuel. AFFF contains per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), sometimes referred to as “forever chemicals” because they tend to remain in the environment indefinitely. Persistent PFAS exposure has also been linked to various health conditions.
